| Julia began drawing at an early age, where her inspirations were horses. In the third grade she even entered her own illustrated horse book into her elementary school’s library! Julia’s father was a medical illustrator for over 20 years and painted numerous abstracts, and her mother is an avid doodler, so art was always present and encouraged in her home. | |

A native of North Carolina, Julia has always been drawn to the
beauty of the state, and of the colors changing with the seasons. A
graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, Julia pursued her other
passions – a study of Spanish and Psychology. She married Craig
Mathews, became a Spanish teacher, and had two wonderful sons.
Art was always in the back of her mind; any time she and her husband
traveled over the years, art galleries were always on the top of
their “to do” list. They are self-proclaimed art enthusiasts! Julia
and her husband have collected many original pieces for their home,
and often visit local galleries and museums in the Triangle area. In the past few years, Julia has taken the “next step” in her love for art. She desires to express herself primarily in landscapes, those of travels past and of voyages to come. With some drawing classes and watercolor courses under her belt, she is essentially self-taught in acrylics. She works with bold colors and strokes to give her own interpretation to her paintings. Julia has gained much inspiration from the works and advice of several local artists, friends and family including Catherine Martin, Luanna Luconi Winner, Tony Alderman, and Diana Coidan. |
| Julia desires to share her view of beauty and nature with her friends and the public. Currently her work is featured in The Nature of Art in Holly Springs, NC. Julia and her family have resided in Holly Springs for three years where she teaches English as a Second Language at Holly Ridge Middle School. She also teaches piano, plays keyboard and sings background vocals for Grace Church in Cary, and of course, paints in her free time. | |
